About the Steel: 15N20 Carbon Tool Steel

Because performance matters more than hype. This high-toughness steel has long been trusted by bladesmiths for its razor-sharp edge, incredible resilience, and ability to withstand hard use—from carving and feathering to batoning and game processing. It’s not stainless, so it will age and patina with you, becoming a tool with real character.

15N20 tool steel is a type of steel that has a mix of iron, carbon, and a bit of nickel. The carbon makes it hard and able to hold a sharp edge, while the nickel adds toughness and helps prevent it from breaking or chipping.

Why it’s good for wilderness knives:

• Sharpness – It takes a very fine edge, which is great for carving, food prep, or making fire sticks.
• Toughness – It’s less likely to crack or chip if you’re doing hard work like batoning wood.
  
• Easy to sharpen – You can bring it back to razor sharp with simple tools, which is handy in the wild.
  
• That balance of toughness, easy sharpening, and edge retention, makes 15N20 a solid choice for wilderness knives.

15N20 isn’t stainless, which is part of why it performs so well in the field. Like all high-carbon steels, it does need a little care: a quick wipe after use and a drop of oil on the blade when not in use. If neglected, it will develop rust — but with just minimal attention, it will stay razor-sharp and dependable for years.
