Vårvinter (pronounced vore-vinter), or "Spring-Winter", is what we call our "fifth season" here in Lapland. After the darkness of December, and the bone-gnawing chill of January, the months get progressively lighter and warmer as winter begins to make way for the arrival of spring.
Vårvinter is a blend of both seasons - deep snow, chilly nights, but the sun shining during the day can give plus temperatures, and the warmth and brightness of the sun reflecting off the snow surface. Sunglasses are a must!
March and April are the vårvinter months. It is a time to enjoy the outdoors and enjoy the snow, sitting around a crackling fire drinking coffee after a morning skiing or riding a snowmobile.
